Dining & Nightlife

Chicago's steakhouse tradition may be best experienced at glitzy Gibson's, voted the best steakhouse in America. Other Chicago stalwarts even the locals swear by include Bavette's Bar and Boeuf, a French-inspired steakhouse that doubles as the perfect date spot, Girl & the Goat and Shaw's Crab House. For the big nights, there's Alinea, Grant Achatz' renowned take on classic American - a splurge but well worth it. As for drinks, consider the Franklin Room's massive whiskey selection or Three Dots and a Dash's subterranean tiki paradise. Knock one back at Commons Club, Sir Richard Branson's recently-opened first hotel in America, or visit Henry's Swing Club for fun drinks and parlor games. For those oenophiles and beer lovers who want to make a trip farther afield, there's the Lagunitas Brewery, City Winery Chicago and Chicago Distilling Company, where visitors can enjoy tastings and cocktails in the 1,700-square-foot bar area or shop for spirits in the retail space.

Many of the world's leading retail stores populate the Magnificent Mile, including department stores Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Barneys New York. The Mile also houses a stunning number of luxury boutiques (many of which have only a few North American locations), including Cartier, Escada, Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chanel, Georg Jensen, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, Stuart Weitzman, Prada, Montblanc, Hugo Boss, Anne Fontaine, Rolex, Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lauren's largest store in the world), Prada, Lanvin, Giorgio Armani, Henri Bendel, Brunello Cucinelli, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Carolina Herrera, Moncler, Furla, Harry Winston, Ermenegildo Zegna, Zara, Burberry (its U.S. flagship), Vera Wang, La Perla, Agent Provocateur, Dennis Basso, Tom Ford, Christian Louboutin, Wolford, Saint Laurent, and many others. Local shopping treasures include Akira, Lori's Shoes, Jayson Home, Merz Apothecary, bespoke men's tailor Martin Greenfield, 57th Street Books, dark hipster haven Gallery Aesthete and the wonders of the chaotic, creativity-laden Merchandise Mart speak to Chicago's one-of-a-kind character.

The Near South is a hot spot of cultural riches; the Museum Campus, a beautiful spot along the lake features the Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Science and Industry. In the Loop, the Art Institute of Chicago; and in Lincoln Park, a short trip from the Loop, the free Lincoln Park Zoo welcomes visitors every day of the week.
